ZAGREB, Jan 26 (Hina) - The presidents of five Croatian parties from
the "Opposition Six" held a meeting at the Croatian Social-Liberal
Party (HSLS) headquarters in Zagreb on Monday evening, Croatian
Television (HRT) reported last night.
The Opposition leaders did not want to give any statements, but
unofficial sources say they discussed invitations for talks, sent
to three Opposition leaders by the Croatian President Franjo
Tudjman.
Tudjman sent invitations for separate talks to HSLS president
Drazen Budisa, Social-Democratic Party (SDP) president Ivica Racan
and Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) president Zlatko Tomcic.
The talks were scheduled for Tuesday morning and Tudjman is to
attend them in his capacity as the President of the Republic.
The Monday evening meeting was attended by Budisa, Racan, Tomcic,
Vlado Gotovac (Liberal Party, LS) and Radimir Cacic (Croatian
People's Party, HNS). Ivan Jakovcic of the Istrian Democratic
Assembly (IDS) did not attend the meeting.
Unofficial sources say that Tudjman's invitations for talks to
Budisa, Racan and Tomcic surprised the other three Opposition
leaders.
Tuesday's issue of the "Jutarnji list" daily carries a statement by
the LS president Vlado Gotovac: "Budisa informed me today that he
would go (to the talks) to Tudjman. I am appalled because after we
made a joint decision (in December) that we would not go to Tudjman
for talks, there were no discussions whatsoever in the Opposition
Six that anyone would go individually".
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) vice president Vladimir Seks last
night confirmed that Budisa, Racan and Tomcic had been invited to
separate talks with Tudjman, in his capacity as the President of the
State.
Seks could not say whether the three Opposition leaders would
accept the invitation. The talks should focus on the political
situation, that is, major political problems, Seks told reporters
after yesterday's session of the HDZ parliamentary bench.
