ZAGREB, Dec 11 (Hina) - Passenger air transport over Croatia is
safe, Croatian Transport Minister Alojz Tusek told Monday's news
conference.
"Our sky is safe and the situation in air traffic control is better
than previously. There is no reason for catastrophe prognoses," he
asserted, assessing renowned foreign airlines would surely not be
landing at Croatian airports if it was not safe to do so.
Croatia is at the very top on the safe air traffic list.
"There have been omissions, but not such as to endanger safety," the
Minister's assistant for inspections, Miroslav Borkovic said.
The news conference on Monday was held in the wake of Sunday's
article in Zagreb's daily Vjesnik in which the president of the
Croatian Flight Controllers' Union, Mladen Hochberger claimed this
year's increased flight season had resulted in more incidents than
usual over Croatia, the cause of which were aircraft flying too
close to each other.
If something is not done soon, the security of flights over Croatia
next summer could be in serious jeopardy, Hochberger claimed.
According to him, the primary problem is the overwhelming amount of
traffic in relation to the number of personnel and the
catastrophically bad equipment in flight control premises at the
Zagreb airport.
Borkovic said of the total of 200 flights in Croatia three incidents
had been registered, of which two had been caused by flight
controllers, and the causes of the third were the subject of
enquiry. Responsible for one of the incidents, according to
Borkovic, is Hochberger himself.
