ZAGREB, Nov 22 (Hina) - At the Zagreb Summit scheduled for November
24, the European Commission will point out that every country
included in the Stabilisation and Association process should be
treated individually, however, it will also point to the
significance of regional cooperation, read a statement issued by a
delegation of the European Commission to Croatia.
"The Commission will underline that each country will be treated
individually. Our approach will be tailored to each country's
circumstances and to the pace of reforms actually being carried
out," the statement read.
"In addition to helping bind each country to European structures,
the Commission will stress the importance of more and better
regional cooperation. Many of the problems in the region - from
illegal trafficking of human beings to transport and the
environment - need regional solutions which the Commission is s
prepared to support", read the statement.
The Summit will also mark the end of negotiations with the former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on the Stabilisation and
Association Agreement and will open negotiations with Croatia on a
similar agreement.
The Commission is determined to ensure Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina
and the FRY get all the help they need to prepare for the serious
obligations which the Stabilisation and Association Agreement
entail. The commission acknowledged the progress that has been made
by Albania and Bosnia and is beginning to discuss with the FRY how
can it get the most out of the opportunities the stabilisation and
Association process offers, the European Commission said in the
statement.
The statement also read that president of the Commission Romano
Prodi and Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Chris Patten would
attend the Zagreb Summit's.
According to the European Commission, the purpose of the Summit
will be to map out a vision for the closer integration into the
mainstream of Europe of the five countries that benefit from the
EU's Stabilisation and Association process - Albania, Bosnia-
Herzegovina, Croatia, FRY and Macedonia. In return for a clear
commitment to sustained reform, regional cooperation and respect
for democratic standards and international obligations, the
European Union is offering these countries a road to Europe as
potential candidates for membership, the statement read.
