detriment of Croatia's interests, European Commission president
Romano Prodi told Croatian head of state Stipe Mesic on Wednesday.
On the contrary, Prodi told Mesic in a telephone conversation,

Prodi said the recent change of authority in Belgrade would make it
possible to include the entire region in democratisation and
development processes.
The European Union is conducting intensive preparations for the
Zagreb Summit next month, he said, adding he was confident the
summit would contribute to reinforcing Croatia's status on the
international scene.
President Mesic thanked the EC official on the friendly message and
clear encouragement, adding Croatia was interested in developing
trade resources and building two key transport routes across its
territory. Prodi extended his full support.
Mesic also outlined the points Croatia considered paramount for a
gradual normalisation of relations between Yugoslavia and the
international community.
