"I stress, on behalf of the Government, that a great majority of
citizens wishes to show hospitality during the Summit, their wish
to become a member of the European society as soon as possible. We do
not believe the small minority of those not wishing such a
development of events can harm Croatia," Racan said after a meeting
of a coordination of the ruling coalition of six parties.
I expect a high degree of responsibility, because I hold that
Croatia's historic opportunity must not be jeopardised by an
irresponsible minority, though they do have a right to express
their opinions. It is a democratic right to express dissatisfaction
with this or that, the Prime Minister said in reply to questions
about announcements of protest rallies to be held at the time of the
Summit at the end of this week.
Some non-parliament parties, unions and centres for the protection
of the Homeland Defence War dignity have announced they would hold
protest rallies at the time of the Summit.
Racan stressed Croatia has a duty to be efficient in securing the
European officials arriving in Zagreb, and there would be "no joke
or games" about the issue.
Racan told reporters the leaders of the six ruling parties at
Tuesday's meeting had exchanged insight about announced rallies,
but would provide more information about the issue on Wednesday,
when a news conference is scheduled.
