WATER IN SLUNJ GOOD FOR DRINKING -- MINISTER

ZAGREB, Nov 3 (Hina) - Croatian Environment Protection and Urban Development Minister Bozo Kovacevic said Friday the residents of Slunj would be able to use water for drinking as of today. A cistern with 8,000 litres of sulphuric acid overturned in the town of Slusinci near Karlovac (50km south of Zagreb). The acid leaked leaking onto the road and into the nearby river, contaminating the area's water supply on Friday, October 27. All relevant institutions went to the scene to investigate and clean the area. The state water supply inspection banned the use of drinking water as a precaution. Not one analysis that was done has shown the water to be polluted, Kovacevic said. The soil was neutralised with lime. In contact with sulphuric acid, lime renders the chemical solid, and about 30 square metres of the residue was thus removed. All relevant institutions reacted timely, the clearing of the terrain was done in line with rule

Prime Minister Ivica Racan stressed a big catastrophe had been avoided. He committed the environment protection minister and other relevant ministries to prepare a report on the dangers and suggestions of improving the safety of hazardous materials. (hina) lml
