BREZNICKI HUM, Oct 10 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivica Racan on Tuesday
opened for traffic the 12.3km-long section of the Zagreb-Gorican
highway between Komin and Breznicki Hum in northern Croatia.
The 361 million kuna ($42.47 million) investment was made by the
Croatian Road Administration. Fourteen contractors participated
in the execution of the project.
Congratulating the contractors, the prime minister pointed to the
outstanding importance the future Zagreb-Gorican highway would
have for Croatian economy and better ties with Central Europe. He
was confident the Rijeka-Zagreb-Gorican highway would be completed
during his term in office, and that after three years he and his
Hungarian counterpart would take a ride from Rijeka to Budapest.
Despite the grave economic and financial situation, the Croatian
government earmarked 166 million kuna ($19.53 million) for the
Komin - Breznicki Hum section, as well as 171 million ($20.12
million) to settle an old the debt to the contractors.
"It is my great pleasure that owing to its good political rating,
and the increasingly better economic one... Croatia has been
granted about EUR150 million from the Stability Pact (for Southeast
Europe), which will be used to build the remaining 23 km, from
Breznicki Hum to Varazdin," said Racan.
"All this, plus the quality of the contractors, is a guarantee that
the Zagreb-Gorican highway will be completed in time and that it
will serve the citizens and economy of... Croatia," he added.
The prime minister said that in the future, the construction of
objects of any kind without complying with procedure and the law was
not going to be tolerated.
The Komin - Breznicki Hum section has been opened for traffic on a
temporary basis, as a building permit has not been obtained for its
entire length. Racan set a one month deadline for the collection of
the necessary documents, saying that unless it was done, he would
urge that those responsible be called to account.
Public Works, Reconstruction and Construction Minister Radimir
Cacic, also present, said the government had invested a lot of
effort to complete the said section as soon as possible and open it
for traffic given that it was a route used very frequently.
The Zagreb-Varazdin-Gorican highway is part of E-65, the
international corridor connecting the Hungarian capital Budapest
with Varazdin in northern Croatia, Zagreb, and Rijeka in the
northern Adriatic.
Its chief function is to connect countries in Central and East
Europe with ports in Croatia's northern Adriatic. It is also very
important for Croatia's road network, in which it is known as state
highway D-3, connecting Gorican, Cakovec, Varazdin, Zagreb,
Karlovac, and Rijeka.
The building of a highway from Rijeka via Zagreb to the Croatian-
Hungarian border in the north is part of Croatia's basic
development strategy, as well as a priority of national and
regional significance.
