Congratulating the contractors, the prime minister pointed to the
outstanding importance the future Zagreb-Gorican highway would
have for Croatian economy and better ties with Central Europe. He
was confident the Rijeka-Zagreb-Gorican highway would be completed
during his term in office.
The Zagreb-Varazdin-Gorican highway is part of E-65, the
international corridor connecting the Hungarian capital Budapest
with Varazdin in northern Croatia, Zagreb, and Rijeka in the
northern Adriatic.
Its chief function is to connect countries in Central and East
Europe with ports in Croatia's northern Adriatic. It is also very
important for Croatia's road network, in which it is known as state
highway D-3, connecting Gorican, Cakovec, Varazdin, Zagreb,
Karlovac, and Rijeka.
The building of a highway from Rijeka via Zagreb to the Croatian-
Hungarian border in the north is part of Croatia's basic
development strategy, as well as a priority of national and
regional significance.
