Schuessel commented on events in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), saying that every change in Belgrade was better that the current status quo. ZAGREB, Oct 6 (Hina) - Yugoslavia is welcomed in the international
community, however, it must commit to accepting obligations,
including crucial cooperation with the International Criminal
Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Austrian Chancellor
Wolfgang Schuessel, said in Zagreb Friday, after talks with
Croatian President Stipe Mesic.
Schuessel commented on events in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
(FRY), saying that every change in Belgrade was better that the
current status quo.
Naturally, Croatia and Austria positively reacted to the changes.
However, at the same time we wish to stress that with all the joy
caused by the changes, expectations must be precisely defined.
Yugoslavia is welcome in the international community, however, it
must commit to accept all obligations necessary for the membership
in the Organisation for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) and the
United Nations. The return of refugees remains to be the main
priority, as well as the cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, which
is crucial and must not be forgotten about, Schuessel said.
He expressed hope that those messages would be forwarded to the FRY
on Monday at a meeting of European Union's foreign ministers.
Speaking of today's talks he held in Zagreb, the Austrian
Chancellor said they tackled a series of different projects for the
future cooperation between the two countries.
Schuessel said Croatia and Austria managed to established
satisfactory economic relations, adding that Austria's trade with
Croatia exceeded the one with Greece and Finland together. He also
stressed it was necessary to continue the intensive dialogue
between the two countries.
During his one-day stay, Schuessel held talks with Croatian Prime
Minister Ivica Racan, and Croatian national parliament's speaker
Zlatko Tomcic. The Austrian Chancellor also held talks with
president of the Croatian Social Liberal Party Drazen Budisa.
After the talks with the Croatian President, Schuessel left
Croatia.
