GENERALS GOT WRONG IMPRESSION - SAYS HEAD OF JOURNALISTS' SOCIETY

ZAGREB, Sept 28 (Hina) - A letter by military officials to the civil society will not contribute to the creation of a tolerant climate, Croatian Journalists' Association president Dragutin Lucic said on Thursday reacting to a letter sent the Croatian public by 12 generals. Lucic said in a written statement to the media he had not got the impression "that Croatian media are waging a 'campaign to criminalise the Homeland Defence War,' and 'insulting and disparaging the Croatian army,' as claimed by the signatories of the open letter" - the Croatian generals. Lucic says the "generals' call," to the media in particular to, according to their letter, "oppose the negative, historically inaccurate and false presentation of the Homeland Defence War," is an "unpleasant throwback to times when 'committees', and then 'head offices', disciplined 'naughty journalists', decreeing how to write." "I join the call to 'protect the honour and dignity of Croatia's officers and soldiers,' and contribute to the 'climate of tolerance and building of democratic Croatia,' but I expect the same from the signatories of the 'open letter'," Lucic concluded in his written statement to the media.
