DJAKOVO, Sept 19 (Hina) - An association of farmers in Slavonia and
Baranja (eastern Croatia) on Tuesday announced new blockades of
roads for tomorrow.
The head of the association (called "ZUSSB"), Antun Laslo, told a
news conference that the traffic would be impeded on several roads
owing to the failure of a company "In-Cubo" to respect a contract
with farmers.
The ZUSSB leadership claimed that following the postponement of
payment for the wheat given to that company, its director Mara
Lucic, on Monday requested once again to delay the payment of 56
million kuna of the debt for two or three days.
The farmers said they could no longer believe "In-Cubo" and its
director.
The only condition which should be fulfilled in order that farmer
gave up from their protest is that the wheat be paid immediately and
that they could conduct talks with the responsible persons.
This time farmers accused Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic of this
situation as his ministry signed the contract with "In-Cubo".
The farmer complained that their representatives had not been
present at the conclusion of the deal and the invitation for bids.
A few local roads will be closed in the areas around Djakovo,
Pozega, Lipik and near Bilje (Baranja) and on some other spots.
Today another association of farmers in Djakovo called "USDJ" held
also a news conference. It supported the owner of "In-Cubo, Mara
Lucic, asserting that thanks to her, 90 percent of farmers in the
area of Djakovo received regularly money for their wheat.
Later in the day the "In-Cubo" director Lucic issued a statement
saying that the company had paid orders for 56 million of the debt
for this year's wheat via several co-operative farms. "Farmers who
have delivered the wheat via those farms and companies will get the
money in a few coming days from the Croatian Postanska Bank," read
the statement.
Commenting on the statement a ZUSSB leader, Stanko Zdravcevic, said
this fulfilled prerequisites for the discontinuation of protest
actions. Zdravcevic, however, added that the protest would be
staged in the aforementioned places.
