RETURNEES CRITICISE LATEST ARRESTS OF WAR CRIMES SUSPECTS

OSIJEK, Sept 18 (Hina) - The Osijek-Baranja County Returnees' Association (ZPH) on Monday condemned last week's arrests of Homeland War soldiers and the passive behaviour of competent ministries in investigating crimes committed against Croats. The returnees requested the government to start establishing centres for gathering data on war crimes committed in the areas of special state concern so that they could facilitate the uncovering and processing of war criminals. The latest apprehensions of war crimes suspects were described by ZPH president Josip Kompanovic as "insulting and disgraceful". Kompanovic said he supported the processing of war crimes, but not total oblivion as regarded the situation in 1991 and the fact that aggression against and numerous crimes were committed in Croatia. The returnees also criticised the government for the slow pace of reconstruction.(hina) rml
