OSIJEK HOSTS EUROPE'S JEWISH HERITAGE DAY OSIJEK, Sept 3 (Hina) - The eastern Croatian town of Osijek is the host of Europe's Jewish Heritage Day, which this year for the first time is being held in 16 European countries. According to
the president of Osijek's Jewish Community, Darko Fischer, the purpose of the event is to preserve the memory of the rich Jewish heritage. Osijek's Jewish Community was established in 1849. It had more than 2,500 members at the turn of the century, but only about a hundred now. Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. today, the general public will be able to visit the premises, taking a look at sculptures, paintings, and documents on the life of Osijek's Jews. The documents show the activity of the Jewish Community in Osijek until 1941, and from 1945 to the present. This year, Osijek is the only Croatian town to host the event. Next year, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, Cakovec, and Vukovar will follow.(hina) ha
