The 46-year-old resident of Gospic had voluntarily testified
before the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague on
alleged crimes committed against Serb civilians by the Croat side
in the Gospic area in late 1991.
Some 200 people gathered at the funeral, including Levar's family
and relatives, representatives of Croatian authorities and a small
number of Gospic residents.
Attending the funeral, on behalf of the Government, was Deputy
Prime Minister Zeljka Antunovic, President Stipe Mesic's envoy
Sinisa Jagodic, Lika-Senj County Prefect Ante Frkovic, the head of
the county police department, Dubravko Novak, and other political
and public figures.
Before the funeral ceremony, Antunovic said the Government would
not tolerate attacks, whether terrorist or other, against people,
just because someone did not like what they were saying.
Milan Levar did not deserve to die this way, Antunovic said, adding
the Government would see that laws were respected.
There were no farewell speeches at the funeral.
