ZAGREB, Aug 29 (Hina) - The Croatian Government has harshly
denounced the killing of a witness for the international war crimes
tribunal, Milan Levar.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Government stressed it would
"demand of the authorities to invest all efforts into discovering
the perpetrator of this crime". #L#
The crime has been rendered even more grave because of the fact that
he had been a man who publicly spoke about war crimes, the statement
said.
It is evident that those who are directly involved in war crimes
will not refrain from any sort of crime, which makes it necessary
for Croatia, as a democratic and law-based state, to be determined
and consistent in solving war crimes and punishing their
perpetrators, the Government asserted.
Milan Levar voluntarily testified before the Hague-based
international war crimes tribunal in 1997 about alleged crimes of
Croats against Serb civilians in 1991 in Gospic and the surrounding
area.
Levar specifically mentioned Croatian Army generals Mirko Norac
and Tihomir Oreskovic, who had since categorically dismissed his
accusations.
Levar was killed in an explosion in the yard of his home in Gospic on
Monday.
