SPLIT, Aug 25 (Hina) - The night between Thursday and Friday was extremely difficult for firefighters in the area of the central Adriatic city of Split. The worst situation was in Lokva Rogoznica from where 1,000 tourists and locals

SPLIT, Aug 25 (Hina) - The night between Thursday and Friday was
extremely difficult for firefighters in the area of the central
Adriatic city of Split.
The worst situation was in Lokva Rogoznica from where 1,000
tourists and locals were evacuated shortly after midnight.
Croatia's head firefighting commander Mladen Jurin told Hina he
could not remember a night like this taking place before, adding
that a fire in Rogoznica spread on over eight kilometres including a
part of the Adriatic highway, jeopardising houses. People were
evacuated due to safety reasons.
"It seems that the fire has been put under control", said Jurin and
added people were returning to their houses. He stressed the fire
would remain under control unless a strong wind, which would help
the spreading of fire, took place again.
The fire was also put out by firefighters which arrived to the fire
spots from Croatia's inland.
Firefighters in Sinj's area also had a difficult night. There were
several fires in the area and two new ones broke out recently. The
fire near Vrlika has been put out, and one which has been put under
control, broke out again.
Two fires in the area, namely the fire on the Svilaja mountain, and
the one on the Dinara mountain, cannot be put out because of mines
which are planted in the area. Vrlika hunters, who tried to help
putting out the fires, almost got killed yesterday when an antitank
mine went off.
Fires in the Dubrovnik area are partially under control. The fires
have consumed over 1,000 hectares of woods and low plant cover. A
new fire, which broke out near Zaton Malo last night came close to
houses, however, firefighters managed to take control over it.
Zadar and Sibenik areas are facing similar situation, however a
fire in Zadar region is seriously spreading and now is threatening
to consume pine trees.
