ZAGREB, July 27 (Hina) - Croatian Radio and Television (HRT)
director Mirko Galic and Croatian Bishops' Conference (HBK)
president Msgr Josip Bozanic on Thursday signed a HRT-HBK mutual
relations agreement.
The agreement, based on a Croatia-Holy See agreement on education
and culture, regulates mutual relations in the production and
broadcasting of religious programmes referring to the Catholic
Church, without, however, excluding other religious communities.
HRT's Galic said the agreement did not give the Catholic Church
monopoly on religious programmes on HRT, but that other communities
would retain their space as before. He added the source for the
agreement were similar ones between two European Union countries,
Italy and Portugal, and two aspiring to the EU, Hungary and Poland.
Galic said an expert team would establish the right to the degree of
representation on radio and television after a new law on religious
communities was passed, in line with representation in society.
Public television and public radio are the religious communities'
service for objective reporting on their life and expression of
their religious identity, he added.
Msgr Bozanic said the agreement signed today was based on high
civilisational principles and the Croatian Constitution, which
guarantees freedom of conscience and religion and equality before
the law for all religious communities.
Bozanic added the agreement emphasised religious freedoms in a
pluralist society, as well as respect for the feelings of the
faithful, members of society, and the basic human values of
religious and ethical nature.
The Catholic Church in Croatia, respecting the principles of
dialogue and tolerance, is willing to cooperate with all working on
the promotion of a good and real progress of our society, the
Monsignor said.
