Montgomery on Thursday presented six Croatian non-governmental
organisation with donations from the U.S. government.
NGOs are a society's driving force which can do what governments
alone never would be able to, the ambassador said in Zagreb.
The U.S. government through the U.S. Agency for International
Development donated US$335,000 for programmes of six NGOs from
Zagreb, Split, and Osijek, according to Montgomery, in view of
promoting NGO development and encouraging private incentives to
the third sector.
The U.S. ambassador said the Croatian authorities' attitude
towards NGOs had changed dramatically during his mandate here. When
he arrived, Montgomery said, the government viewed NGOs with
suspicion and in an almost hostile manner. Now, we are cooperating
with the government on NGOs' projects, the government is assisting
them, and this is a radical change, he added.
USAID this and last year donated more than US$800,000 to NGOs in
Croatia.
