FRENCH ACADEMY AWARDS CROATIAN TRANSLATOR MARAS

WASHINGTON/PARIS, July 2 (Hina) - Croatian translator Mate Maras is the winner of this year's French Academy award for the promotion and spreading of the French language and culture. He was awarded for his translation into Croatian of Francois Rabelais' five-book tome "Gargantua and Pantagruel". Maras is a minister adviser on culture at the Croatian Embassy in Washington. His translation of "Gargantua and Pantangruel" is the first and thus far only translation of the Rabelais tome into Croatian. It was published by Zagreb's Matica Hrvatska in separate books over five years. It is expected the same publisher will soon issue this French Renaissance literary classic in a single edition with comments, a review archive, chronology, and glossary by Maras.
