WORKERS' UNION HARSHLY CRITICISES GOVT OVER ANNOUNCED BANKRUPTCIES

ZAGREB, June 29 (Hina) - The Association of Workers' Unions of Croatia (URSH) on Thursday voiced extreme concern about yesterday's announcement regarding bankruptcy proceedings in as many as 208 companies with 11,462 employees, in which the state owns more than 25 percent of shares. In a statement issued today, the URSH said this confirmed that the government was not conducting any socially-oriented programme for overcoming the crisis. The URSH is especially concerned about the fact that thousands of workers in branches with a low capital earning capacity will lose their jobs and that the new wave of bankruptcies comes at a time when it is obvious that the government does not have the strength to cut public spending and implement reforms which it had promised before the election. The association believes it is indicative that the bankruptcy wave and the going into force of the Law on the Rights and Obligations of Parliamentary Representatives "granting the alleged people's deputies financial privileges unheard of in countries in transition" are coinciding. It also assesses that the social unawareness and exclusiveness can have serious consequences for the government. (hina) jn rml
