WASHINGTON, June 7 (Hina) - A Croatian delegation will begin two-day negotiations in Houston on Thursday with representatives of the United States Enron company on several issues from a contract on the construction of the Jertovec gas
power plant near Zagreb. Participating in the talks should be Croatia's First Deputy Premier Goran Granic, Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic, and the chairman of the board of Croatia's power utility company HEP, Ivo Covic. WASHINGTON, June 7 (Hina) - A Croatian delegation will begin two-
day negotiations in Houston on Thursday with representatives of the
United States Enron company on several issues from a contract on the
construction of the Jertovec gas power plant near Zagreb.
Participating in the talks should be Croatia's First Deputy Premier
Goran Granic, Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic, and the chairman of
the board of Croatia's power utility company HEP, Ivo Covic. They
will be joined by Croatia's Ambassador to the U.S. Miomir Zuzul, and
hold the bulk of the talks with Enron's vice president, Joe Sutton.
Fizulic has said he will present a programme for the reform of
Croatia's power supply market which the Economy Ministry forwarded
to government last week.
"The future Jertovec gas plant would have the status of independent
power generating plant and be one in a series of private plants,"
Fizulic said. Croatia will propose to Enron to change the contract
so that Jertovec be given the status of independent power
generating plant.
Croatian Premier Ivica Racan said on Tuesday the government wanted
to harmonise the contract with Enron. "We are not entirely
satisfied with the contract, but do not intend to cancel it," he
added.
The construction of the Jertovec power plant is financed with money
from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Minister Fizulic said the EBRD was satisfied with the Croatian
proposal, and voiced hope Enron would be willing to cooperate.
The contract Croatia signed with Enron last year has been harshly
criticised in public. It has been said it is bad for Croatia and
claimed that it was signed for political motives and needs.
