SPLIT, June 4 (Hina) - Blue Flags were ceremonially hoisted on
Sunday at 22 Croatian marinas and beaches.#L#
These flags are given to the coastal areas that have managed to
protect the natural environment and have the unpolluted sea waters
in accordance with European standards as well as to offer the cosy
ambience for leisure and sports. The flags are raised on the
occasion of World Environmental Protection Day (June 4) and they
actually mark the beginning of a summer tourist season.
Croatian tourist workers said this award also contributes to the
promotion of tourism in Croatia.
The season of the blue flag lasts until the beginning of September
and every year beaches and marina must again apply for the award.
Only after the re-examination of their conditions, beaches and
marinas can get blue flags next session if they meet strict criteria
for this award. A marina can have the blue flag over the entire year
if it maintains required conditions and fulfils criteria for
hoisting this flag.
Marinas in Split, Umag, Cres, Jezera, Vrboska, Opatija, Korcula,
Veruda in Pula, Vodice, Milna, Dubrovnik and Punat have received
the blue flag for this season.
In addition, the blue flags will be displayed at beaches of hotels
"Parentium", "Galiot", "Ulika", "Laguna Materada" in Porec, the
beach of the camp ground "Valkanela" and the nudist camp
"Koversada" in Vrsar, "Vela Plaza" in Baska, "Valalta" in Rovinj,
"Punta Rat" in Brela and the town bath in Crikvenica.
