MINISTER FIZULIC: CROATIAN FIRMS AND IRANIANS CONSIDER CONCRETE JOBS

ZAGREB, May 18 (Hina) - Croatian companies have been invited to take part in big infrastructure projects in Iran, such as the construction of a railway line, delivery of locomotives and carriages or the building of speed boats. There have been agreements on principle about the participation in extraction of petroleum and maintenance of oil wells in Iran, and the Croatian national oil company 'INA' has been offered possibilities for concluding deals on long-term oil delivery. These are some of businesses agreed upon during a Croatian delegation's two-day visit to Iran. Croatian Economy Ministry officials and executives of 12 companies stayed in that country in the Middle East on 16 and 17 May, and Croatian Economy Minister Goranko Fizulic on Thursday informed reporters of this event. During their stay, the joint Croatian-Iranian committee for economic cooperation held a session while the two countries' ministers signed a contract on the mutual stimulation and protection of investments. The planned businesses should help enhance the modest trade between Zagreb and Tehran, which currently amounts to only 28 million dollars. On the occasion of that visit it was agreed that Croatian firms should take part in the construction of a 2,000-kilometre-long railway line, and a part of necessary engines and carriages can be supplied from the existing rolling stock of the Croatian Rail (HZ). Fizulic told the news conference that probably 100 engines and carriages should be provided, and the whole job would be worth 100 million dollars. Croatians proposed to the Iranian government that they work together with Slovenia's 'Litostroj' and Bosnia-Herzegovina's Zenica Ironworks in that project. This will enable the Zenica plan to reinstate production of rails in its furnaces and this will be important for Croatia as it can then obtain material from Zenica (central Bosnia) for the reconstruction of Lika and Una railway lines, Fizulic explained. The company "Galeb" from vela Luka on the island of Korcula will sign a contract with the Iranian Navy on the provision of 12 speed boats, each of them worth two million dollars and on the repairs of on two big ships. The Iranian national company for petroleum transportation will in the future forward its tenders for the ship building to Croatian shipyards. Croatia's electric appliances manufacturer "Koncar" was asked to establish a joint company with the Iranian party for constructing hydro- and thermo- electric power plants in that Asian country.
