ZAGREB, May 5 (Hina) - Modern management must not be tied to politics, that is, it cannot be the subject of political suitability, but ability. Connections between management and politics in Croatia can be recognised even today, but
this connection must be removed completely, Croatian President Stipe Mesic said during talks with students of the Faculty of Economy in Zagreb on Friday. Croatia needs an audit of the privatisation process so that which is possible to mend can be mended after a systematic ten-year carrying out of the incorrect policy of a "crazed idea that 200 families must manage Croatia's capital," Mesic stressed. Out of all the countries in transition Croatia was in the best position to found its economy on ownership, he said, adding this had not been implemented due to the wrong policy, so it was possible for a person who could not afford even a bicycle before, was able to buy 176 companies.
ZAGREB, May 5 (Hina) - Modern management must not be tied to
politics, that is, it cannot be the subject of political
suitability, but ability. Connections between management and
politics in Croatia can be recognised even today, but this
connection must be removed completely, Croatian President Stipe
Mesic said during talks with students of the Faculty of Economy in
Zagreb on Friday.
Croatia needs an audit of the privatisation process so that which is
possible to mend can be mended after a systematic ten-year carrying
out of the incorrect policy of a "crazed idea that 200 families must
manage Croatia's capital," Mesic stressed.
Out of all the countries in transition Croatia was in the best
position to found its economy on ownership, he said, adding this had
not been implemented due to the wrong policy, so it was possible for
a person who could not afford even a bicycle before, was able to buy
176 companies.
According to Mesic, this was possible to amend, but power and will
of a critical mass of people was necessary to force those who make
decisions to urgent and effective changes.
Croatia's strategic goal is entrance into European associations,
Mesic said, expressing hope Croatia would become a member of the
European Union during his mandate.
"The former authorities were xenophobic towards Europe and the
United States, and made mistakes in their policy towards Bosnia-
Herzegovina, trying to build a 'Greater Croatia'," he asserted.
A necessary "turnaround" towards European associations is possible
only if Croatia is a law-based state, Mesic said.
This, he stressed, includes an individualisation of guilt for war
crimes and cooperation with the Hague-based international war
crimes tribunal.
On this path, he said, "Croatia must not be a hostage to those who
committed war crimes".
Mesic asserted "the massacre of Croatia on the part of those living
off the Government budget must not be allowed". "No Liovic-kind of
person must be conceded to in the face of threats of a coup d'etat,"
he stressed.
(President of the Association of Croatian Homeland War Military
Invalids (HVIDRA), Marinko Liovic, allegedly threatened a coup
d'etat and "mining" the tourist season unless the requests by
Homeland War soldiers are heeded.)
Constructive dialogue with neighbouring countries is the only way
to solve existing problems, Mesic said.
As far as cooperation with neighbouring Serbia goes, this is not
possible while Milosevic's regime which, he said, has no political
future, rules Serbia.
Cooperation with Serbia will be possible only when "this regime
which is the culprit for the brutal war in the region disappears,"
he stressed, adding "when Serbia experiences a catharsis and
national minorities are accepted as a bridge of cooperation," will
cooperation be possible.
