ZAGREB, May 8 (Hina) - The Zagreb city electoral commission on
Monday issued complete results of Sunday's elections for the Zagreb
City Assembly.
The results do not differ from last night's, commission's chairman,
Miroslav Sumanovic, said Monday.
Out of the total 668,996 registered voters, 232,226, or 33.70 per
cent voted.
Fifteen seats, out of the fifty in the city assembly, were won by the
Social Democratic Party (SDP), ten by the Croatian Social Liberal
Party (HSLS), nine by the Croatian People's Party (HNS), the Action
of Social Democrats of Croatia and Liberal Party (ASH-LS) coalition
won six seats, Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) five, the Democratic
Centre (DC) five and Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) two seats.
Although it had previously been announced that the City Assembly
would hold its constitutive session on May 31, the Government's
city commissioner, Josip Kregar, said Monday parties, should they
be interested in doing so, could motion to the Government an earlier
constituting of the Assembly.
Kregar expressed satisfaction with the elections and announced he
would on Friday invite political parties which won assembly seats,
to discuss the convening of an Assembly session.
The new City Assembly will decide on the appointment of a new Zagreb
mayor, and as not one party has the necessary majority, the election
of the mayor will depend on an agreement among parties, Kregar
said.
Asked how much money was spent in the elections, Kregar said the
funds spent were much less than the envisaged four million kuna (DM1
million).
The Zagreb City Assembly was dissolved on March 10 following the
resignations of 26 out of 50 councillors, causing the need for the
snap elections.
