ZAGREB, May 5 (Hina) - As of Monday, attorneys of Croats indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) will have access to documents from the archive of the Croatian Intelligence Service (HIS),
Croatian First Deputy Premier Goran Granic said Friday. He also announced that a special centre for the documentation would be established. The centre would include the documentation of the HIS, the Defence Ministry, the Interior Ministry, and most probably a part of the documentation filed by the Croatian President. The Council for cooperation with the ICTY on Thursday decided that all technical measures be taken so that attorneys of Croats tried before the ICTY could have access to the documentation from the HIS archive, which was made available to the ICTY prosecution, Granic said after today's session of the Government. ZAGREB, May 5 (Hina) - As of Monday, attorneys of Croats indicted by
the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
(ICTY) will have access to documents from the archive of the
Croatian Intelligence Service (HIS), Croatian First Deputy Premier
Goran Granic said Friday.
He also announced that a special centre for the documentation would
be established. The centre would include the documentation of the
HIS, the Defence Ministry, the Interior Ministry, and most probably
a part of the documentation filed by the Croatian President.
The Council for cooperation with the ICTY on Thursday decided that
all technical measures be taken so that attorneys of Croats tried
before the ICTY could have access to the documentation from the HIS
archive, which was made available to the ICTY prosecution, Granic
said after today's session of the Government.
Attorney Ante Nobilo criticised the Government for making
available the archive of the Croatian Council of Defence (HVO) to
the ICTY prosecutors before it did to Croats' attorneys, who
requested the archive to be available a month and a half ago.
Granic said he held a phone conversation with Nobilo earlier today,
adding he criticised Nobilo for communicating via media before
informing the Council of the problem.
The Council on Thursday agreed on a procedure regarding the use of
the archive for it is a sensitive issue. Requests for accessing the
documentation of the archive will be handled by the head of the HIS,
Granic said.
According to him, the main problem is lack of space and experts for
archive works in the HIS. "The HIS has only two people who know how
to do this, so the Interior Ministry will help out", Granic added.
The Establishment of the Centre will most probably be proposed to
the Government at its next session. Granic stressed that the issue
of the organisation and administration of the documentation should
handled first, followed by the issue of the space and
accommodation.
