ZAGREB, May 2 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan
announced today the Government would in the middle of this month
accurately inform the public about its work in the first 100 days of
managing the country, and will also present further measures of
stimulating economic development and investments.
"It is the Government's task to resolutely tackle problems, show a
perspective and way out of the crisis, and justify the citizens'
hopes," Racan said Tuesday at the main committee session of the
Social Democratic Party, of which he is president.
Racan admitted the Government itself was not completely satisfied
with what it had achieved in the first hundred days, but justified
this with the difficulty of inherited economic problems and
numerous obligations of the state, some of which he "found out this
morning".
"We are facing a situation into which we did not have complete
insight," Racan said, speaking about the need of returning the
country's internal and foreign debt, and the need of carrying out
the policy of savings and development.
He described as radical, but necessary the Government's decision to
return ten billion kuna (US$1.25 billion) of the state's debt this
year.
"We needed to make this radical move to disable discretion decision
making, and, if you will, corruption in our Government as well,"
Racan said.
He announced a strong fight against organised crime and
corruption.
Racan stressed that exclusively the institutions of a legal state
may tackle crime and robbery, and must not await for instructions.
"This Government wishes to strengthen democracy and legal state in
Croatia and will not allow us to dive into elements of cleansing".
Racan said in the following 100 days Croatia is looking at joining
the Partnership for Peace programme, World Trade Organisation, the
decision on the start of the process of association in the European
union and strengthening international economic relations.
