ZAGREB, March 14 (Hina) - The Serb National Party (SNS) believes the Croatian government should not give political connotations to the trial of Tihomir Blaskic, sentenced by The Hague-based international war crimes tribunal to 45

ZAGREB, March 14 (Hina) - The Serb National Party (SNS) believes the
Croatian government should not give political connotations to the
trial of Tihomir Blaskic, sentenced by The Hague-based
international war crimes tribunal to 45 years in prison, because it
is solely a judicial matter.
SNS president Milan Djukic said the trial of Blaskic was not the
trial of the entire Croat people and the SNS believed the tribunal
was fair. However, some groups of citizens are politicising the
case and blowing it out of proportions so that Croatia could sever
its cooperation with the tribunal, which could only do a disservice
to Blaskic and Croatia, Djukic said.
The government has taken over obligations and given promises and
only it is responsible for the functioning of the rule of law and no
groups of citizens can take the law in their own hands, Djukic
said.
The issue of refugee return must not be tied to the country's
economic situation, Djukic said, adding, "those were platitudes
used by the Croatian Democratic Union before the international
community." The process of return must be a legal issue and all
citizens must be allowed to return to their homes under equal
conditions, he concluded.
