ZAGREB MEETS FORMER CITY LEADERSHIP ZAGREB, Mar 13 (Hina) - The Government commissioner for the City of Zagreb, Josip Kregar, on Monday held talks with Marina Matulovic-Dropulic, a former Zagreb mayor, and Zlatko Canjuga, a former
president of the City Assembly, regarding the hand-over of their powers. "We believe that the City should continue developing and we will not wait a single minute, let alone two months, to continue what has already been started in the city," Kregar said. Kregar said he agreed with Dropulic for members of the city leadership, i.e. the heads of city offices, to submit short reports on the situation in their areas of activity, so that it could be determined as of when city issues are within his (Kregar's) jurisdiction. ZAGREB, Mar 13 (Hina) - The Government commissioner for the City of
Zagreb, Josip Kregar, on Monday held talks with Marina Matulovic-
Dropulic, a former Zagreb mayor, and Zlatko Canjuga, a former
president of the City Assembly, regarding the hand-over of their
powers.
"We believe that the City should continue developing and we will not
wait a single minute, let alone two months, to continue what has
already been started in the city," Kregar said.
Kregar said he agreed with Dropulic for members of the city
leadership, i.e. the heads of city offices, to submit short reports
on the situation in their areas of activity, so that it could be
determined as of when city issues are within his (Kregar's)
jurisdiction.
After the meeting with Dropulic, Kregar visited the City Assembly,
where he met Zlatko Canjuga, who handed him over his powers.
Kregar said his main priority is for everything in the city to
function appropriately, that elections be held on time and that the
city win the authorities it deserves.
The government on Friday adopted a decision on dissolving the
Zagreb City Assembly on the basis of written resignations by 26 (of
50) councillors, and appointed Kregar, a professor at Zagreb's Law
School, its commissioner for the City of Zagreb.
After the expiry of 75 days, the government can call and implement
an early local election.
The Zagreb City Assembly crisis started in 1995 with the failure of
the late Croatian President Franjo Tudjman to confirm mayors
proposed by the then Opposition. The crisis ended in 1997, when the
HDZ won the necessary majority of 26 councillors after two
opposition councillors joined HDZ's ranks.
