ZAGREB, March 9 (Hina) - The Croatian judiciary should urgently
undergo reforms, Justice Minister Stjepan Ivanisevic said on
Thursday accusing former authorities of pushing the judiciary into
a worrisome and difficult situation by their interference.
Opening a three-day round table called "The Croatian Judiciary At
The Turn To A New Millennium", Ivanisevic said major problems were
inefficiency, many pending cases, failure to sanction a series of
crimes, preferential treatment of officials, weak protection of
creditors and "considerable amount of corruption and keeping files
in the back of a drawer".
According to him, a main cause for such situation is that former
authorities meddled in the appointment of judges and the activities
of judicial institutions.
Ivanisevic stressed that citizens had the right to be dissatisfied,
and urged an immediate reform of the judiciary. Changes were not
possible without the influence of the executive authorities, but,
he cautioned, one must be careful not to bring the independence of
courts in jeopardy.
He said the Justice Ministry would try to create all conditions for
independent and efficient judiciary.
This event was organised by the Croatian Bar Association, Law
School at Zagreb University, the Croatian Law Centre and the
Croatian chamber of public notaries. Conclusions of the three-day
discussion will be forwarded to relevant ministries.
