MOVEMENT FOR DEMOCRACY URGES DISSOLUTION OF UPPER HOUSE

ZAGREB, Feb 25 (Hina) - The Croatian Movement for Democracy and Social Justice has launched a drive for the dissolution of the Croatian National Sabor's House of Counties. The Movement believes that the upper house should be replaced with a senate in which representatives for economy, science and culture would be elected in line with the majority electoral system along with representatives from counties. The Movement formulated its proposal in a declaration, which was adopted at the association's annual session on Friday. It is also suggested in the declaration that the current composition of the Constitutional Court also be dissolved, because the Movement believes that the current composition was elected in line with political and not professional criteria. The Movement's president Ivan Supek said the association would insist on the completion of democratic processes and assist in the creation of a European and humanitarian society. "It is obvious that Croatia has to embrace European laws and ways of living and a significant part of that job has to be carried out by civil non- governmental institutions," Supek said. Today's session called on Bosnian Croats to build their country with the other two constituent peoples as a democratic, prosperous and peacemaking state. (hina) jn rml
