Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Association of Media in Bosnia-
Herzegovina forwarded an open letter to the High Representative to
the country, Woflgang Petrisch, and his deputy in charge of the
media, Simon Haselock, requesting the development and ensuring of
equality for Croat media in "their country Bosnia-Herzegovina".
Out of the 431 media registered in Bosnia-Herzegovina at the end of
last year, Croats have 29 radio and three local television
stations, and not one public.
Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina do not even have a daily newspaper,
the letter said.
The associations expressed dissatisfaction with the slow
implementation of a decision made by former high Representative,
Carlos Westendorp, about the reconstruction of the system of public
broadcasting in Bosnia-Herzegovina of July 30, 1999, and warned
that the "terrible media image of the Croat people in Bosnia-
Herzegovina is being aggravated daily".
They requested of Petrisch and Haselock a final reorganisation of
the Radio Television of Bosnia.-Herzegovina and the start of
functioning of the Radio and Television of the Bosnian Federation.
The associations recalled that the deadlines for the completion of
these tasks, according to Westendorp's decision, had expired on
January 1, 2000.
They also requested a permanent working permit for the Croat radio
Herzeg-Bosnia which would broadcast all over the country.
The Bosnian Federation Government and the international community
are asked in the letter to provide assistance for the publishing of
independent Croat dailies in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and financial
assistance to the only Croat weekly in the country, the "Croat
Word".
