Ex-Serb paramilitary pleads not guilty at his third trial

RIJJEKA, June 15 (Hina) - Former Croatian Serb paramilitary Mico Cekinovic pleaded not guilty to war crimes charges at his third trial on Wednesday in Rijeka.

At his first trial before the Karlovac County court in 2009, he was was given a one-year prison sentence. At the retrial in 2010 he was sentenced to four years in jail.

Both verdicts were quashed by the Supreme Court, which ordered the retrials.

The third trial was referred to the Rijeka County Court as one of the four courts in Croatia tasked with tackling war crimes cases and also in order to ensure full impartiality, the trial chamber's presiding judge Ika Saric said today.

The indictment alleges that the unit under Cekinovic's command was responsible for the persecution of Croats in Gornje Primislje, the murder of civilian Pavo Ivsic and arson attacks on houses in the Slunj area in 1991.

Video recordings of Serb rebel attacks on Slunj and nearby villages were shown in the courtroom today.
