Ombudsman, gender equality ombudswoman slam homophobic incidents

ZAGREB, June 13 (Hina) - The ombudsman for human rights, Jurica Malcic, and the ombudswoman for gender equality, Gordana Lukac-Koritnik, on Monday issued separate statements condemning violence at the first gay pride parade in Split on Saturday.

Malcic deplored the violence and hate speech at the event, calling on the police to inform the public about steps they had taken and would take to confront the violence and homophobic statements over the pride parade. He recalled that the 2010 Zagreb pride parade was also marked by incidents,

Malcic said that an inadequate response to homophobic statements and incidents so far had paved the way for large-scale homophobic incidents in Split last Saturday.

Lukac-Koritnik said that incidents in Split violated the constitutional rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, which she said should worry the government.
