First gay pride parade in Split, three reporters slightly hurt

ZAGREB, June 11 (Hina) - The first gay parade in the Croatian Adriatic city of Split began on Saturday afternoon with some 200 participants walking through the centre of the city, amidst heavy police presence.

Organisers Iskorak, Kontra and Domina said that apart from local participants, guests from Belgrade and Ljubljana also took part in the event.

Participants were carrying a large rainbow flag and banners with messages calling for equality of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) population.

Several hundred police officers were guarding the parade, with some of them in full riot gear.

Nearby streets were cordoned off.

Three reporters were slightly hurt on the main waterfront promenade where anti-gay protesters gathered behind a crowd control fence and shouted insulting slogans against the LGBT community. The reporters were injured by stones which the crowd hurled at the parade participants. Bottles and firecrackers were also thrown.
