ZAGREB, Feb 16 (Hina) - Croatia's Minister of Public Works,
Reconstruction and Construction, Radimir Cacic, on Wednesday met
the head of the OSCE mission in Croatia, Bernard Ponchet, the
Ministry said in a statement.
Ponchet informed Cacic of the current work of the OSCE
(Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) mission in
Croatia.
The two discussed Croatia's international commitments in the
reconstruction and the return of refugees, as this mission is
following how Zagreb is meeting its obligation in those fields.
According to the statement, Minister Cacic said the Croatian
Government and he personally were completely orientated toward the
equal treatment of all citizens of Croatia in every way.
Concerning this matter, the Public Works Ministry will propose for
the next session of Croatia's National Sabor amendments to laws and
acts which the international community views as worrisome and
potentially discriminatory.
Cacic stressed that the change of legislative regulations,
however, cannot lead to the automatically acceleration of the
return process, as programmes of the reconstruction and return must
be backed by adequate financial resources. Croatia is expecting the
assistance of the international community because the state budget
of this country has very limited possibilities.
On Wednesday, Cacic also held talks with the head of the UNHCR
mission in Croatia, Robert M. Robinson, on the return of refugees
and displaced persons. Robinson acquainted the Croatian Minister
with the UNHCR work in speeding up the refugee return to Croatia.
The U.N. official voiced willingness for the further cooperation
with the Croatian Government.
He conveyed the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees) Sadako Ogata's congratulations to Croatia's new
authorities, and announced her visit to Croatia in near future.
