ZAGREB, Jan 17 (Hina) - The presidency of the Federation of Workers'
Labour Unions of Croatia (URSH) on Friday unanimously decided to
support the candidacy of Stipe Mesic for the coming Croatian
presidential election, URSH President Boris Kunst told reporters
on Monday.
"URSH supports Stipe Mesic as it believes that he will deconstruct
the pathetic presidentialism and immaculately cooperate with the
Government and the Sabor," Kunst said at a news conference at which
Stipe Mesic was present as well.
He recalled that Mesic had taken part in many actions organised by
this federation of trade unions, and described him as "a man with
a clear vision of the promotion of social dialogue."
Commenting on a rise in his popularity at the opinion polls, Mesic
said he viewed it as the recognition of his work so far.
Mesic assessed that there was now new danger of monopoly over power
in case that the President of Croatia be the candidate of the SDP-
HSLS coalition which won the recent parliamentary election.
After the change in the balance of power on the Croatian political
scene this candidate of the Opposition Four block (HNS, IDS, HSS and
LS) expects from the Croatian National Sabor to become the highest
legislative body in the state,
Mesic added that he would request from such parliament to adopt "a
strategy of the overall development of Croatia and an aggressive
programme for creation of jobs."
Stressing that he highly appreciates other candidates for
Croatia's President, Mesic said he believed Mate Granic could not
become President as he "has taken part in the current wrong policy
of the HDZ."
