CAKOVEC, Dec 7 (Hina) - The government will persevere in the fight
against grey economy and black labour, Premier Ivica Racan
reiterated at a meeting with businessmen and MPs from Medjimurje
County in Cakovec Friday.
Speaking about new markets, Racan said Croatia had made major
progress in accessing the European market in the past two years.
Conditions for the opening of the European market towards Croatian
products have been ensured, but it is another question whether we
will be able to make the best of them, Racan said.
He said the government was ready to secure additional funds for
agriculture, on condition it underwent reforms.
After the meeting, Racan told journalists he regretted that talks
on a border agreement with Slovenia had come to a halt. He could not
say when the issue would be solved.
"I personally believe this is detrimental, particularly to
Croatia," Racan said.
He said the border issue with Slovenia could be solved much sooner
if bordering counties were to decide about it. "Unfortunately, this
has become a matter of internal affairs and subject to the testing
of patriotism in the wrong way," Racan assessed.
As regards the border in Medjimurje County, Racan believes it is
important that corrections on the border do not reduce Croatia's,
that is, Medjimurje's territory.
Potential disproportions in land quality could be compensated very
quickly by increasing the quality of our land through investments,
Racan said.
Medjimurje County Prefect Branko Levacic said people from
Medjimurje were willing to accept the border agreement with some
minor corrections.
Prime Minister Racan promised he would speak with representatives
of the Education and Sports Ministry to see what could be done
regarding the education of the Romany community in Medjimurje
County.
He also said he supported yesterday's statements by Slavko Linic
regarding soccer and betting offices.
Racan reminded Linic said that order had to be introduced in games
of chance and betting offices. Croatia must join the countries
which make profit from games of chance, he said. Each country makes
profit from such games and Croatia must as well, instead of allowing
individuals to make profits.
