ZAGREB, Nov 22 (Hina) - Owing to higher petroleum product royalties allocated for road construction, the price of fuel might increase by 3.25 percent as of Jan. 1, 2002. The government on Thursday adopted amendments to the Public
Roads Law, whereby the royalty per one litre of petroleum product allocated to Croatian Motorways (HAC) is 60 instead of the former 50 lipa, in view of expediting the construction of the Zagreb-Split Motorway. When 4.5 lipa per litre in Value Added Tax is added to said amount, fuel might become 3.27 percent more expensive than at present, reporters were told at the government. ZAGREB, Nov 22 (Hina) - Owing to higher petroleum product royalties

by 3.25 percent as of Jan. 1, 2002.
The government on Thursday adopted amendments to the Public Roads
Law, whereby the royalty per one litre of petroleum product
allocated to Croatian Motorways (HAC) is 60 instead of the former 50
lipa, in view of expediting the construction of the Zagreb-Split
Motorway.
When 4.5 lipa per litre in Value Added Tax is added to said amount,
fuel might become 3.27 percent more expensive than at present,
reporters were told at the government.
The 10-percent increase in royalty per litre would help HAC earn an
additional 199.4 million kuna (approx. $23.7 million), said
Transport Minister Alojz Tusek.
Also today, the government forwarded into parliament a draft
environmental protection strategy, a national action plan for the
environment, and the Information and Communication Technology
document, drawn up as part of the Croatian Development Strategy in
the 21st Century project.
Said document comprises clear recommendations as to what has to be
done to successfully implement the strategy.
The government, for instance, is requested to develop an
information and communication infrastructure throughout the
state, encourage electronic business, and create a contemporary
educational system which will pay attention to teaching
information and communication technology.
The government will be included in said trends.
Sustainable development and preparations for joining the European
Union from the perspective of environmental protection are goals
set in the environmental protection strategy.
It was pointed out at today's government session that more than 300
European documents need to be built into the domestic legislation.
Changes are required in the protection of waters, air, and waste
management.
The government forwarded into parliament the final draft of a bill
on a national foundation for science, higher education, and
technological development. The foundation would be entitled to a
share of the profits of the newly-established Development and
Employment Fund, in view of ensuring stable sources of financing.
The government passed a decree stipulating special conditions
which have to be met by certain types of retail stores, such as
supermarkets. These conditions include building a transport
infrastructure, and connections with public city transport. The
consent on the meeting of said conditions is given by the economy
minister at the proposal of a special commission.
