CROATIAN PARLIAMENT DISCUSSES NATIONAL RADIO, TELEVISION STATUTE

ZAGREB, Nov 21 (Hina) - MPs of the ruling five-party coalition on Wednesday stressed that the parliament should agree to the new Statute of the Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) as that would "untangle" some issues on the television, while the Opposition claimed the Statute was unacceptable, nor can it be acceptable since it had been drawn up on the basis of a bad law. Although MPs were only to vote on the Statute, they expanded the subject to the television programme, especially its news section. Both ruling and opposition MPs were critical towards the television, citing concrete shows and features as, they said, examples of unprofessional work - from the story about the war invalid with a high degree of disability to the "Latinica" political show. Anto Kovacevic of the Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HKDU) was especially harsh and said the national television was neither public, nor void of

The parliament will vote on whether to agree to endorse the Statute when it continues the 18th session. The session today continued with a discussion on a bill on drug abuse prevention and on the implementation of the National Strategy to fight the abuse of drugs. (hina) lml sb
