BELGRADE, Nov 20 (Hina) - Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica has
opposed an initiative by the presidency of the ruling DOS coalition
that the Yugoslav government commission for Kosovo be dissolved.
In a letter to Yugoslav and Serbian Prime Ministers Dragisa Pesic
and Zoran Djindjic and the chairmen of the Serbian-Yugoslav co-
ordinating body for Kosovo and state commission for the province,
Nebojsa Covic and Momcilo Trajkovic, Kostunica said the "two
institutions (the co-ordinating body and the commission) were
complementing each other."
Explaining its suggestion of Monday on dissolving the Yugoslav
government commission for Kosovo, which is headed by Trajkovic, the
DOS coalition presidency said the commission's activities were
overlapping with those of the state co-ordinating body, which is
headed by Covic.
Kostunica said the decision of the coalition's presidency was
reminiscent of communist times and added that no party or coalition
had the right to dissolve state institutions.
Trajkovic has been accused lately of conducting a campaign aimed at
discouraging Kosovo Serbs from participating in the Nov. 17 general
election in the province. He personally did not vote and claims he
did not run the campaign, while his party, the Kosovo Serb
Resistance (SPOT), openly stated the participation of Serbs in the
election would mean they agreed with the legalisation of Kosovo's
independence.
