ZAGREB, Oct 16 (Hina) - The company Baxter will request an integral
scientific analysis of the safety of dialysers used in Croatia and
set up an independent team of nephrologists who will take part in an
investigation into last week's death of 23 kidney patients.
The multinational company said in a statement on Tuesday the team
would fully cooperate with Croatian authorities in a comprehensive
probe into the tragic event.
The team will be headed by Bernard Canaud, a French professor from
Montpellier, and include eminent experts from several big European
university hospitals and TUV Product Service.
The statement quotes Baxter's assistant director for Europe Jose
Divino as saying that it is impossible at present to precisely state
the cause of the deaths as many variables were included in the
incidents. According to reports, the autopsies have shown
different causes of death and that symptoms began at different
times, says Divino.
The different series and models of series P dialysers, which are
distributed by Croatia's drugs company Pliva and are also known as
Baxter's series A and which were used in 22 of the 23 deaths, were
not the only common element in the dialysis of the patients, the
statement reads.
No element of the dialysis has undergone such strict testing as
dialysers of that series. TUV Product Service, Europe's leading
institution for the evaluation of the safety of medical devices,
and haemodialysis equipment in particular, on Oct. 9 issued an
independent release confirming the safety of Baxter's products.
Baxter and TUV tests were in compliance with the strictest and most
intensive standards used in the testing of the biocompatibility of
medical devices, namely ISP 10993, Baxter says in the statement.
