ZAGREB, Oct 15 (Hina) - Jose Divino, a representative of the Baxter
International Inc., a company which manufactures products and
equipment used in hospitals, on Sunday said that dialyzers made by
this company were probably the most thoroughly tested dialyzers and
they proved safe.
Divino, who is an assistant to the director of Baxter's European
department, was quoted by the Croatian Television as saying on
Sunday night that dialyzers had been tested by the company four
times in the past six weeks.
The devices were tested by a German firm, "TuV PS", which is an
independent body, according to him.
The tests of this product include all important factors such as
cyto-toxicological factors, bio-compatibility, haemolisis,
subcutaneous reaction and systematic toxicology.
We have arrived today to take part in the investigation into these
tragic deaths. We conducted through tests of our dialyzers inside
the company and via TuV, and the tests showed that they were
correct, Divino asserted.
Asked about the causes of the death of 23 kidney dialysis patients
undergoing treatment in hospitals across Croatia in the past few
days, Divino said he would not speculate about it as he had
possesses no information.
Baxter wants to cooperate with Croatian authorities, he added.
In the wake of this tragic deaths last week, Baxter representatives
came to Croatia on Sunday afternoon and went straight into talks
with government, medical officials and Pliva, Croatia's leading
drugs company, which imports Baxter's dialyzers and delivers them
to Croatian hospitals.
Divino believes that the Croatian authorities, together with
nephrologists, should conduct an investigation, and expresses hope
that such a probe may establish the cause of those tragic events.
On Saturday, Croatia's Health Ministry ordered hospitals to
withdraw all serial numbers of Baxter's dialyses machines, which
are regarded as a potential cause of the death of the dialysis
patients. Hospitals received dialysis machines from other
manufacturers.
