PODGORICA DAILY SENTENCES TO 5 MONTHS IN PRISON PODGORICA, Sept 3 (Hina) - The editor-in-chief of Podgorica's daily "Dan", of pro-Yugoslav and pro-Serbian orientation, Vladimir Asanin, was sentenced to five months in prison and two
years probation on Monday because the daily had, on several occasions, published articles which, according to the court's ruling, libelled Serbian businessman Stanko Cane Subotic. Asanin was found guilty of libel, having quoted Zagreb's weekly "Nacional" which libelled Subotic as the chief Mafia boss involved in illegal cigarette smuggling. The explanation of the verdict read that Asanin quoted untruths which caused damage to Subotic's reputation and honour. After the verdict was read, Asanin said he would appeal, and stressed this was a direct verdict against free press and independent judiciary.
