ZAGREB, Aug 17 (Hina) - A Croatian citizen, apprehended in Germany
on Tuesday on the ground of an international warrant for his arrest
on suspicion that he committed war crimes, is Mile Grbic from
Plitvice, Croatia's Interior Ministry stated on Friday afternoon.
According to a statement released by the German police and
subsequently confirmed by the Croatian Interior Ministry, Grbic is
suspected of involvement in 30 cases of murder in the second half of
1991 during the Homeland Defence War. At the time he joined ethnic
Serb terrorist units that launched attacks on civilian targets in
the villages of Poljanak, Sertic Poljana, Korana and Smoljanac.
Local villagers were taken to a concentration camp run by rebel
Serbs in their stronghold of Knin, and 30 people were killed in
detention.
The 42-year-old Grbic was nabbed in the north-western town of
Bremervoerde where he was working as a waiter. During the arrest,
carried out by special police units, he was unarmed and offered no
resistance.
According to the Croatian ministry, Grbic was put on an Interpol
list of wanted suspects by the Zagreb-based Interpol office last
November after the local police in the central town of Gospic issued
a warrant for his arrest.
Police in the German city of Rotenburg was informed by the federal
crime office of the suspect's whereabouts and after that the state
prosecutor's office in Celle issued a warrant for his arrest.
The Croatian government must, through diplomatic channels, present
extradition documents within 40 days of the arrest to the state
court in Celle, and the German government should make a final
decision on whether or not the man should be handed over to Zagreb.
The Interior Ministry stated today the further procedure about
Grbic's extradition would be led by the Croatian Justice Ministry.
