Commemorative events held in memory of 402 Croatian children killed in war

SLAVONSKI BROD, May 28 (Hina) - Parents whose underage children were killed during the Homeland Defence War on Saturday gathered in the eastern Croatian city of Slavonski Bord on Saturday to commemorate the deaths of 402 children who lost their lives in the said war in the early 1990s.

Wreath-laying ceremonies were held at the monument called "The Little Girl (Djevojciica)" and requiem mass was said in a local Catholic church.

The head of an association of families of civilian war victims, Julijana Rosandic, said that no one had yet been brought to justice for the murder of innocent children.

Commenting on the recent arrest of Ratko Mladic, the wartime Bosnian Serb military commander, Rosandic said that he was also responsible for the killings of 28 children in Slavonski Brod in the war.

Mladic was the then commander of the Bosnian Serb forces that shelled Slavonski Brod, situated on the left bank of the River Sava, from their positions on the opposite bank on the Bosnian side.

Apart from 402 children killed in the Homeland Defence War, 1,044 were wounded.
