Vice President Vidakovic-Mukic resigns over HHO statement

ZAGREB, April 29 (Hina) - Marta Vidakovic-Mukic has resigned from the position of the Croatian Helsinki Committee (HHO) over her disagreement with this human rights watchdog's recent statement claiming that "not one member of the Croatian Army or the police, or anyone else, has been convicted for war crimes committed against Serbs, either civilians or soldiers, in the wake of Operation Storm".

Vidakovic-Mukic, a former deputy of the Croatian public ombudsman, was the only member of the nine-strong HHO executive committee to be against that statement.

Explaining her resignation, she said in a press release on Friday that she was unpleasantly surprised as the HHO statement published the statement without a previous serious and thorough discussion and ignoring her objections.

She holds that the HHO has no right to interfere into any ongoing court proceedings that that it has no right to render the defence of any suspect in criminal proceedings more difficult.

She finds the HHO statement about Zeljko Sacic particularly disputable.

The HHO claims that war-time special police deputy commander Zeljko Sacic had demanded of crime investigators to "carry out a fake on-site investigation" in the village of Grubori,

She said that this was a probably slanderous claim which could give reasons to Sacic to sue the HHO.
