member-countries convene in Brussels on Monday, under the
chairmanship of Louis Michel, the foreign minister of Belgium,
which took over the rotating presidency of the Union on July 1.
The Brussels meeting will discuss Belgium's programme for its six-
month-long chairmanship.
Belgium has drawn up an ambitious programme with six main chapters:
the elaboration of discussions on the EU's future; the improvement
of the work, the promotion of equal chances for everybody and the
fight against social poverty; the promotion of viable economic
growth and common economic policy; the creation of European space
of freedom, safety and justice; the promotion of sustainable
progress and enhancement of the quality of living; the Union's
enlargement and the strengthening of its aspects in the foreign
policy.
The parliamentary session's agenda will include a discussion on the
situation in the western Balkans.
Being acquainted with a report drawn up by EU High Representative
for foreign affairs and joint security, Javier Solana, the
ministers will discuss the situation in Macedonia in the wake of a
July 5 cease-fire agreement.
The ministerial council will consider the developments regarding
the work of the UN war crimes tribunal (ICTY) and the Croatian
government's decision to continue cooperating with the Tribunal as
well as the situation in the wake of the extradition of former
Serbian and Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
The EU ministers will also discuss the situation in the Near East
and in the area of Great Lakes in Africa.
