CROATIA'S PUBLIC SERVANTS GATHER FOR PROTEST IN DOWNTOWN ZAGREB

ZAGREB ZAGREB, June 21 (Hina) - Several thousand public servants gathered for a rally in Zagreb's central Ban Jelacic square at noon on Thursday, protesting against salary cuts and voicing dissatisfaction with the government's wage policy for the public sector. Participating in the protest are public servants in health, welfare, education, science, higher education and culture from Zagreb and Zagreb County and public servants from other parts of Croatia. According to police reports, about 7,000 people are participating in the protest. The Council of Croatian Public Service Workers Unions, which organised the rally, claims the new wage system has resulted in 10-35 percent cuts in the salaries of most of 100,000 public servants, primarily those with semi-skilled training and secondary school qualifications and more years of service. The unionists claim the government is responsible for "misleading the public" by claiming that there will be no cuts in their net salaries. Union leaders say all public services are functioning regularly today. (hina) rml
