SPLIT, June 20 (Hina) - With the re-election of Ivan Skaric
(Croatian Social Liberal Party, HSLS) as mayor and the constitution
of the City Assembly, the process of constituting the local
government in Split has been completed, though unsuccessful to
sustain the coalition ruling at the state level.
Skaric, his deputy Dujomir Marasovic (Croatian Democratic Union,
HDZ) and City Assembly president Zvonimir Puljic, were elected by
ten votes of the Croatian Block councillors and four votes of the
HSLS, whereas nine councillors of the coalition, with the Social
Democratic Party (SDP) at the helm, were absent.
Before the vote, SDP's Josip Milat said his coalition expected to
have a mayor from its ranks because it won the most, nine, votes, but
the HSLS, that is, Ivan Skaric, did not stand by the SDP, although
this is a ruling coalition at the state level.
The SDP and its coalition partners did not want to participate in
the election of the so-called technical government, and left the
session.
The SDP announced it would undertake "legal measures", but declined
to say which.
